New York has always been synonymous with innovation and ingenuity. From its beginnings as a modern city to the present, this is evident in its architecture. But "Lenapehoking" (the land of the Lenape tribe) literally laid a blueprint for what would become urban living. With "Manahatta, (meaning hilly island) at its center, the first New Yorkers' contributions, often overlooked in mainstream history, played a crucial role in shaping city life.
For “National Native American Heritage Month" I would like to share this free downloadable printable poster made for educators. It celebrates the contributions of the Lenape people, not just in NYC but most of the North East.
By scanning a QR code on the image, the viewer is guided to a video clip with some historic information on the site. Manahatta was the first in the series.
