You're cordially invited to join artist Franck de las Mercedes and exhibit curator Alexis Mendoza, for a talk moderated by Luis Stephenberg Arles, director of The New York Latin American Art Triennial. This free event is open to the public and will offer the audience in depth insight about the work shown, the artist's process and influences, as well as the curator's interpretation, development and realization of this exhibit at Boricua College.

ABOUT ALEXIS MENDOZA:

Cuban-born Bronxite Alexis Mendoza is an interdisciplinary artist, independent curator, and author. For many years Alexis Mendoza have been working and exploring Black Painting, the style and the term were established in Cuba in the 1950’s by Guido Llinas a prominent Cuban abstract painter. Black Painting metaphorically find it’s based on the overlapping and the transition of colors where black it’s not necessarily the predominant color but rather the meaning of colors used in the Afro-Cuban practices and rituals. Mr. Mendoza exhibited his artworks in museums and galleries around the world in countries such as: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, England, France, Germany, Mexico, Netherlands, Peru, Romania, Spain, Switzerland, and the United States. His works are part of public and private collections in Latin America, Europe and the United States. Alexis Mendoza lives and works in New York City.


ABOUT LUIS STEPHENBERG ALERS:

Luis Stephenberg Alers was raised in Puerto Rico. He graduated from the Puerto Rican Culture Institute School of Fine Arts, and earned a Master’s degree in painting from the Instituto Allende, Universidad de Guanajuato, Mexico. Since the beginning of his career in the arts, he showed an interest in an experimental and mixed media practice, which he has maintained throughout his professional development. Later in his career he integrated electronic images as visual objects. In the 1970s, with a focused interest in conceptual art, he became co-founder of the Movimiento Sintesista Actualizado in San Juan, Puerto Rico; and the Manifestación Internacional Sintesista for the Arts, at the Human Solidarity School on Suffolk Street, in New York City. He is also one of the organizers of The Bronx Hispanic Festival and The Latin American Art Biennial in Bronx, New York. Stephenberg’s works represent the visual expression of particular historical moments. He uses painting, photography and installation as a form of communication between people and cultures, as well as a method for documenting and memorializing past events. His works investigate the development of art as “idea” and engages the viewer in an examination of his or her life in relation to the events portrayed. Luis lives in New York, where he’s participated in several national and international shows. He also is a curator/alternative exhibit space developer focused on community oriented projects.


ABOUT FDLM:

Franck de las Mercedes is an internationally acclaimed contemporary artist from New York City. Born in Nicaragua, Franck has pioneered a style through a multifaceted body of work influenced by abstract expressionism, rock carvings, neo expressionism and Nicaraguan primitivism. Through bright colors, jagged linework and hieroglyph inspired text and abstract patterns, Franck creates emotionally charged work that explores childhood memory, current events, family dynamics and sociocultural topics.

FdlM’ s work has been included in several international exhibitions, including, Queens Museum, BronxArtSpace, The Joan Mitchel Foundation, The Artists Unite MTA Poster Project, The Fabergé Big Egg Hunt New York, The NY Museum of Modern Art’s “Abstract Currents”, BKLYN Designs, Naples Museum of Art, Folklore Museum of Tripotamos Greece, The National College of Ireland, Queens College Art Center Gallery, The 2019 Latin American Triennial of New York, Sing for Hope Pianos, The French Institute Alliance Française. Public collections include Fundación Francisco de Quevedo, Ciudad Real, Spain, Columbia Presbyterian Hospital of New York, City-As-School High School, NY. FdlM is represented by the CAMP Gallery and will be an exhibiting artist at this year's Volta Artfair NYC.
